Crying=opportunity for learning

One week I did two outreaches with children who cried/tantrummed for extended periods of time.  I was easy with this and even had fun myself while they were crying. Eventually they stopped and both children went back to having fun themselves.  In the  Q & A after the sessions, both sets of parents asked the same thing.  "How do you do that? How can you be okay when they are crying like that?"   If you've had the same question when you're child is crying read on.

           First of all when a child is crying I believe that they are doing the best they can to help themselves.  Most likely it has worked for them in some way or another to cry - they get what they want, they make someone uncomfortable, they change the situation in some way. Therefore they are doing what they think is best.  Also, crying can be very organizing to an overstimulated body.  If they have had a lot of stimulus (such as a new person in their space) crying is a way to help themselves cope.

      Second, I believe that the best way that I can help a child is to remain comfortable myself and help them find a more effective way to help themselves.  I see crying as an opportunity to help these children learn faster than I did growing up, that unhappiness is not a very effective tool.  It would be much more useful to simply tell people what they would like or choose something else to do if their first choice is not possible.  The easiest way to do this is to remain calm and comfortable myself.

       I then explain to the child that I don't know what they want when they cry, but they could just tell me or even show me.  I slowly offer them things they might want (slowly so as not to make it seem as if crying gets them things faster).  If they continue to cry like my children did last week (they both talked of wanting out).  I explain the whole situation of why we are there and where there parents are and anything I can think to explain.  If they still cry I then explain that it is their playroom and they are free to do what they like in it, if they want to cry they can.  However, I like to have fun when I'm in the playroom.  I then take my energy off the child and go play by myself making sure to have fun (I like to even hum or sing to myself to really completely take my energy off of them).  Sure enough, both children wanted to eventually play instead of cry.

    The more comfortable and consistent we can be with this the faster we are going to teach our children that crying doesn't work!!!!  Therefore let's all see crying as a wonderful opportunity to teach our children that it is way more fun to be happy!

(side note: last weekend the girl cried 45 minutes in my 1st session, 5 minutes in my 2nd session, and none in my 3rd and 4th - the comfortableness and consistency paid off!)

Super Speaking Skills - breaking words down!

When working on language and encouraging our children to use clear single words, its helpful to break the word down and work on all of its different parts.  However  I had a wonderful reminder yesterday of how complicated speech is and how far we can go when breaking things down for our children. 
          I was working with my daughter and helping her with the "s" sound (she often says "th" instead of "sss")  I tried to help her understand to put her tongue behind her teeth instead of between her teeth. I showed her using my mouth, I held her in front of a mirror, I even tried to move her tongue for her.  She had many wonderful attempts at it, but she just wasn't putting her tongue behind her teeth.  Because she was so motivated to speak and play with me I had more opportunity to work on this than I usually do with other children with autism. 
       I tried breaking the skill further down and encouraged her to wiggle her tongue, this even seemed challenging.  I broke it down further and asked her to just stick her tongue out, she did but with her mouth wide open.  To sharpen the skill I had her do it with her mouth closed.  She once again was challenged with this.  She seemed to start to lose interest so I switched the game up, I had her making vowel sounds that she can do easily. She repeated funny sounds saying  me, mo, mu, mi, may, and then I threw in a tongue wiggle.  This time she did it!     
    She still has a way to go until she is saying her s's consistently, but it was so nice to remember all the little intricacies that go into talking.   The dozens of muscles we have in our face, our  lips, our tongue, our teeth, our voice box, our breathe, then of course also the brain neurons all firing at exactly the precise moment.   Making any sound at all is a minor miracle :)   Let's remember how complicated speaking is and celebrate every little step our children take!

       If your child has a challenge with clear words trying breaking it down into the smallest skills you can think of and build up from there.   Celebrate any and all attempts and remember to have fun!
